TikTok Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

An underground economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison photos, administration instructions and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting customers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Express Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering products of unknown origin.

Some experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on social media or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators try to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer laws, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Platform Reaction and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and banned related keywords and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the platform safe and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of users, filled with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at residence.

After minutes of joining one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Details and Pricing

Inside these groups, messages show black plastic packages with Royal Mail stickers, stating to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Security Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively monitored harmful content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Warnings

“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not contain what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to recent price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has already encountered patients injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may expose users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
